(Newser) – Closing ceremonies for the Clinton Global Initiative had just wrapped up in Manhattan Tuesday night when Donna Shalala, the head of the Clinton Foundation, fell ill, reports the New York Times. The 74-year-old, a trusted confidante who had previously served eight years as Bill Clinton's health secretary, had suffered a stroke, Politico reports. "As some of you may have heard, Donna suffered a stroke this evening after CGI," an email to staff late Tuesday night from Bill and Chelsea Clinton read, adding that "initial reports are very encouraging." Bill Clinton reportedly visited Shalala after she had surgery and had a "good conversation" in which she joked around, a source tells the Times. (The pope RSVP'd "no" to the Clinton Foundation's annual gala in NYC.)
