(Newser) "Sad news" is now making the rounds online from the John McCain camp: Per the New York Times and Fox News, the Arizona senator's family issued a statement Friday announcing he'll no longer seek treatment for the aggressive brain cancer he was diagnosed with in July 2017. Although he'd "surpassed expectations for his survival" up to this point, "the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict," the statement read. "With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment."

The family goes on to thank McCain's caregivers, as well as his "friends ... associates, and the many thousands of people" who've been sending him well wishes and keeping him in their thoughts. "I love my husband with all of my heart," wife Cindy McCain tweeted Friday. "God bless everyone who has cared for my husband along this journey." (Read more John McCain stories.)
