Companies You Didn't Know Were Owned by Amazon
Amazon owns IMDB. Who knew?   (IMDb)

You can buy pretty much anything on Amazon.com—but what you may not know is that some of the things you're buying on Amazon are made by companies that are also owned by Amazon. Of course there are the obvious ones—Amazon Kindle and Amazon Echo, for example—but it also owns "a complex web of businesses and subsidiaries," many of which may surprise you. That's according to BuzzFeed, which offers up a list of every single business it could determine to be owned by Amazon, including dozens of products, brands, and services that don't use the Amazon name. A small sampling follows—we didn't include the acquisitions that made big headlines, like when Amazon purchased Zappos, Audible, or Whole Foods. Here are some of the lesser-known ones:

  1. Society New York: This is just one of more than 80 private-label brands owned by Amazon, and one of a dozen women's clothing brands the company owns. See its wares here. In related news, Amazon owns seven denim brands.

  1. Belei: A line of private-label skincare products.
  2. Ring: Amazon purchased the smart doorbell company last year.
  3. Happy Belly: A line of "everyday essential" food items like coffee and spices. See the offerings here. This is one of a few food-related companies owned by Amazon, including one that makes burger patties.
  4. Basic Care: A line of over-the-counter medicine. Amazon also owns an online pharmacy and a lab dedicated to health care research.
  5. Fabric.com: A wholesale fabric store.
  6. Small Parts: A line of spare parts; see the offerings here. It's just one of many companies related to household goods and furniture Amazon owns.
  7. IMDb: Amazon acquired the Internet Movie Database in 1998.
  8. AbeBooks: Think you managed to find a book for sale somewhere other than Amazon? Think again. Amazon owns this website that sells rare and vintage books.
  9. Goodreads: The social network for book lovers was acquired by Amazon in 2013.
  10. Home Services: A company offering 1,200 unique professional services like housecleaning and lawn care.
  11. Woot!: Amazon owns the popular daily deals site.
