(Newser) – Sports fans, quick: Name the winningest football coach in US history. Chances are you didn't come up with the name John McKissick. But as the AP reports, the longtime coach at Summerville High in Summerville, South Carolina, racked up 621 victories in his lifetime—making him the most successful football coach at any level. The milestone is in the news this week for an unfortunate reason: McKissick died Thursday at the age of 93. He coached at the high school from 1952 to 2014, compiling a record of 621-155-13. His teams won 10 state championships and once racked up 41 wins in a row. The Post and Courier notes that McCissick began coaching when Harry Truman was president and retired when Barack Obama was in the White House. (Read more football coach stories.)
