(Newser) – Joe Biden picked up a notable endorsement on Thursday from someone who once won the Democratic nomination. Former Secretary of State John Kerry backed his longtime friend for the White House, reports the Boston Globe. "The world is broken,” said Kerry, "and I believe very deeply that Joe Biden’s character, his ability to persevere, his decency, and the experiences that he brings to the table are critical to the moment." Kerry also took a shot at Trump: "The world has to be put back together, the world that Donald Trump has smashed apart."

Kerry, the 2004 Democratic nominee, will join Biden on the campaign trail in Iowa Friday, per the Washington Post. Before becoming secretary of state, Kerry served as a Massachusetts senator, and CNN notes that Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont probably would have liked the local backing. (Biden is going after Trump over the hot mic video from NATO.)
