Authorities are delivering grim news out of Tennessee, where they say an infant and toddler were fatally mauled by their family's dogs, an attack that left their mother badly injured. Per FOX 5 Atlanta, a tweet from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office late Wednesday relayed that detectives were at the scene of a home located near Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, where they say the attack by two dogs took place around 3:30pm. The children, a 2-year-old girl and her 5-month-old baby brother, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say the mother was transported to a local hospital, where she was said to be in critical condition, reports WKRN. A spokesman for the sheriff's office says the dogs, which appeared to be pit bulls, were removed from the home by animal control. Authorities haven't yet offered any further details or said if charges will be filed, noting only that the investigation is ongoing. (More Tennessee stories.)
