Pelosi Speaks on Husband's Attack, Midterms

A week after her husband was brutally attacked in their San Francisco home, Nancy Pelosi emerged to make her first public comments. "It's with a grateful heart that I thank you for being here," Pelosi said in a video she posted to her Twitter and YouTube accounts on Friday, the Washington Post reports. "Thank you, thank you, thank you, for your kind words ... and your good wishes for Paul [Pelosi]." The House speaker noted that her 82-year-old spouse had come home from the hospital the previous day, and that "it's going to be a long haul, but he will be well," per CNN.

Pelosi acknowledged that "it’s just so tragic" how the attack transpired, but "nonetheless, we have to be optimistic. He's surrounded by family, so that’s a wonderful thing." The speaker then switched into GOTV mode, stressing how crucial this midterm election is and imploring citizens to head to the polls. "Our values are on the ballot," she said. Pelosi also seemed upbeat about Democrats' chances in races across the country, and on morale. "For some reason they keep saying there are Democrats who are not optimistic.
