Throughout the presidential campaign, James Rainey of the LA Times tried to land an interview with Roberta McCain. “They wouldn’t let me talk, thinking I don’t do the politics thing,” the 97-year-old says. “And they were right.” Now the gag order’s off, and McCain says she “loved every second,” of the campaign, even if she does think the media favored Obama. “You know, you don’t have to win everything to have a good life.”

The media is a big topic for the McCain matriarch. She’s not a fan of partisan talkers like Keith Olbermann or Rush Limbaugh. “Some of them talk like such fools,” she says. She’d like more scrutiny on President Obama, but only if it’s fair. “I am not going to say one word of criticism,” she says. “We are in the toughest times that I think we have had in history. And this country…better get together.” (More John McCain stories.)
