Russian police believe that one of the suicide bombers who attacked Moscow Monday and left 39 dead is the very definition of a “black widow,” having lost her Caucasian Islamist militant husband to Russian security forces at the end of 2009. Dzhennet Abdurakhmanova, from Dagestan, was just 17. Her late husband was said to be connected to Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov, who claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The remains of the bomber at the Lubyanka metro station, where 20 people were killed, strongly resemble Abdurakhmanova in an earlier photo, the BBC notes. She was from a Dagestani region that borders Chechnya, the locus of Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus. President Dmitry Medvedev was in Dagestan yesterday to meet with local leaders about the threat. He was blunt about tactics. “We need to punish.” (More Dzhennet Abdurakhmanova stories.)
