Text Message Frame-Up Lands Woman in Jail

It turns out, you can go to jail for threatening yourself—just call the cops and try to pin it on your ex-boyfriend and his sister-in-law. Jeanne Manunga, a 25-year-old California woman, has been sentenced to a year in jail for sending herself threatening text messages from a prepaid cell phone she bought in the sister-in-law’s name, Wired reports.

Manunga sent herself hundreds of threatening messages, which she reported to three different police departments. Police initially took the bait, arresting the ex-boyfriend once and the sister-in-law three times. But they realized what had actually happened when they found where Manunga had purchased the phone. In addition to the year in jail, Manunga will have to pay her victims $50,000 in restitution. (More stupidity stories.)
