Tugboat Reaches Stranded Cruise Ship

About 4,500 people were stuck at sea

(Newser) – There are only two bright spots here: Nobody got injured, and the toilets are working. A fire aboard the Carnival Splendor cruise ship yesterday rendered it powerless and left its 4,500 passengers and crew stuck at sea. The first of several tugboats en route reached the ship tonight and has begun towing it to San Diego, about 200 miles away.

US military ships and aircraft have been providing fresh supplies—the fire knocked out refrigeration, along with air conditioning, the Internet, and phone service. Carnival Cruise Lines promises full refunds—this happened on day one of the seven-day cruise—and will reimburse the military for the relief mission, reports the Los Angeles Times.
