A Minnesota lawmaker is a hero to some after his passionate defense of gay marriage went viral. Rep. Steve Simon asked lawmakers not to put a ban on gay marriage, which is already outlawed in Minnesota, in the state Constitution. After quoting a clergy member who testified that sexual orientation is a gift from God, Simon said, "I think that's true ... and I would ask everyone on this committee ... if that's true, if it's even possibly true, what does that mean to the moral force of your argument? ... How many more gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether or not God actually wants them around?"
Simon's question was met with applause, and the video has since racked up 175,000 views on YouTube as well as mentions on celebrity and gay rights blogs, Yahoo! News reports. Gawker called Simon's question a "great new slogan for gay equality." But the measure Simon was arguing against, which puts a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage on the 2012 ballot, did pass 10 to 7 along party lines in the House Civil Law Committee on Monday.
