Bill Maher may have disagreed with just about everything Clint Eastwood said in his convention speech—"I had no idea he was such a down the line, right-wing a---hole"—but he's not among those mocking the performance, notes Mediaite. People are always carping that these events are too robotic and scripted, and finally we got something that was anything but, Maher said on his HBO show last night.

  • “As a performer, as a stand-up comedian for 30 years who knows how hard it is to get laughs, excuse me, he went up there … without a net, on a tightrope. There was no teleprompter. He did a bit with just an empty chair and killed. He committed to it, it was consistent and it worked. ... I gotta give him props for that."
