In honor of National Adoption Awareness Month, the Stir rounds up 21 celebrities who've adopted kids:

  • Kristin Davis: The Sex and the City star adopted not just on the show, but in real life. She adopted Gemma Rose domestically in 2011, calling it a "wish come true."
  • Mary-Louise Parker: She gave birth to a son, then adopted a daughter from Ethiopia three years later, in 2007. "I thought, I'm single, it's too hard," she once said. "But then I thought, I don’t want to be on my deathbed not having done something because it was too hard."
  • Denise Richards: She already had two children from her marriage to Charlie Sheen, then adopted Eloise Joni in 2011. "Some people think if a celebrity wants a baby, they get one the next day," she once said, but it took two years.

  • Nia Vardalos: The My Big Fat Greek Wedding star struggled with fertility and then struggled to adopt. Eventually she adopted Ilaria, now 8.
  • Hugh Jackman: He and his wife adopted their children, Oscar and Ava, and as he once explained, "Mixed-race babies have such a hard time being adopted that Deb and I checked off that box specifically when we were filling out our forms."
  • Calista Flockhart: She adopted son Liam when she was single and 36; she was there when he was born.
  • Meg Ryan: She already had a teenage son when she adopted a daughter, Daisy, from China in 2006. "I just saw that face and I knew we were just related," she once said.
  • Sheryl Crow: Her sons Wyatt and Levi are adopted, and she echoes the idea that it's not easy: "We've been going through this for a year," she said before Levi was adopted in 2010. "Getting ready for a baby; it falling apart; getting ready for a baby; the mom changing her mind."
  • Sharon Stone: She's adopted three boys over the past 11 years, and says she's open to adopting another older kid.
  • Jamie Lee Curtis: She and husband Christopher Guest adopted their son and daughter, and Curtis has even written a children's book about adoption.
  • Diane Keaton: She was in her 50s when she adopted daughter Dexter and son Duke, and she said the experience of becoming a mom made her more "giving" and caused her to realize, "I was completely self-involved. I’m an actress after all."
