88th Academy Awards start with a much-anticipated Chris Rock opening

Chris Rock kicked off the night with a monologue that, not surprisingly, touched on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and the boycott of the awards by some black actors and directors. "We want opportunity," Rock told the crowd after a funny yet poignant explanation why he chose not to boycott. "We want black actors to get the same opportunities. That's it." Then, onto the awards:

  • Best Original Screenplay: Spotlight
  • Best Adapted Screenplay: The Big Short
  • Best Supporting Actress: Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl
  • Best Costume Design: Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Best Production Design: Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling: Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Best Cinematography: The Revenant
  • Best Film Editing: Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Best Sound Editing: Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Best Sound Mixing: Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Best Visual Effects: Ex Machina
  • Best Animated Short: Bear Story (this was Chile's first Oscar ever)
  • Best Animated Feature Film: Inside Out
  • Best Supporting Actor: Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
  • Best Documentary, Short Subject: A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness
  • Best Documentary Feature: Amy
  • Best Live-Action Short Film: Stutterer
  • Best Foreign Language Film: Son of Saul
  • Best Original Score: Ennio Morricone for The Hateful Eight (the 87-year-old's first Oscar)
  • Best Song: "Writing's On The Wall," Spectre
  • Best Director: Alejandro G. Inarritu, The Revenant (his second in a row, and the first director in 65 years to win back-to-back honors)
  • Best Actress: Brie Larson, Room
  • Best Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant (his first Oscar)
  • Best Picture: Spotlight
