Just when you thought the bad blood between Senate candidates John Fetterman and Dr. Mehmet Oz couldn't get any worse comes this: Fetterman's accusation that Oz is a "puppy killer." Fetterman's Monday tweet shares a Jezebel article that sums up the site's investigation into Oz's time as a "principal investigator" at the Columbia University Institute of Comparative Medicine labs. Jezebel writes that in that role, Oz assumed "full scientific, administrative, and fiscal responsibility for the conduct" of some 75 studies published under his purview between 1989 and 2010. Jezebel's review of those studies tallied 1,027 live animals used in all, and "34 of these experiments resulted in the deaths of at least 329 dogs"; others reportedly saw pigs, rabbits, and rodents killed.

One of the article's more chilling parts, which comes via testimony provided in the early 2000s by whistleblower and veterinarian Catherine Dell'Orto :

  • "According to Dell’Orto, one Oz-led study resulted in a litter of puppies being killed by intracardiac injection with syringes of expired drugs inserted in their hearts without any sedation. Upon being killed, the puppies were allegedly left in a garbage bag with living puppies who were their littermates."
An Oz campaign rep told Newsweek in a Tuesday statement, "Only the idiots at Newsweek believe what they read at Jezebel." Fetterman is capitalizing on it regardless. He followed up his original tweet with one that reads "that explains Dr. Oz's new campaign theme song"; the accompanying video shows Oz arriving at a rally as Sarah McLachlan's "In the Arms of an Angel" plays. Fetterman later posted a photo of himself embracing one of his dogs, with the other seen in the forefront. (More John Fetterman stories.)
