ABC is ending Callie and Erica's lesbian romance on Grey's Anatomy—and Brooke Smith's role as Dr. Erica Hahn along with it. Though Grey's executive producer said Smith's firing was due to a lack of "magic and chemistry," not her character's sexual orientation, insiders told Entertainment Weekly that ABC execs "had issues" with the explicit direction the relationship was taking.
"I found out in mid-September soon after shooting the monologue that aired last week where Erica has the revelation that she's gay," recounted Ssmith, whose last turn as half of "Callica" airs Thursday. "They even came down and told me it was a great scene—one of the best they ever shot on the show. So I was really, really shocked. I was floored when they told me. It was the last thing I expected."
