When it comes to the holidays, Stephen King is glad to do the right thing—albeit in his own quirky way. Case in point: 150 infantry troops from Maine due to be shipped to Afghanistan next month were to spend the holidays at an Indiana training camp. King answered a call from charity Operation Community Support to fork over the bucks to bring the troops back home. But he only agreed to pay $12,999, because the requested amount, $13,000, was, well, obviously unlucky, reports the Bangor Daily News.
“When we were approached for $13,000, he thought that number was a little unlucky. He didn’t want any bad whammies associated with these troops,” said a personal assistant, who contributed the extra dollar.
