An 11-year-old British Columbia boy and his dog are both fine after a Saturday night run-in with a cougar—during which the dog, Angel, lived up to its name. A cougar charged at Austin Forman as he collected firewood—but Austin’s 18-month-old golden retriever got in between them, leaving Austin free to run inside screaming, “A cougar is eating Angel!” CTVBC reports.

The family called 911 and the constable who arrived within a minute shot the cougar, who was chewing on the dog's face and neck, dead. Angel—who “must’ve known something was up” because she had been following the boy around all day, says Austin’s mother says—is recovering from puncture wounds and a swollen eye. “Now she’s our guardian angel."
