Roger Federer certainly didn't go easy on Fabrice Santoro in their Australian Open match today, but the world's number one ace did give his ami a breather before match point of the 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 contest. "It's so beautiful, what he's doing," the appreciative Frenchman told the AP. In other second-round action:

  • No. 8 Venus Williams defeated Camille Pin (7-5, 6-4) despite sloppy play that included 44 unforced errors.
  • No. 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova had to battle back from a 5-2 hole to beat Tsvetana Pironkova, 7-6(0), 6-2.
  • Fellow Americans James Blake and Michael Russell duked it out in a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 contest that fell to the 12th-seeded Blake.
