Mac Pro Production Moves to China

Apple says its new Mac Pro is designed and engineered in the US and includes American-made components. But it will no longer be built in the US. With trade tensions between the US and China worsening, Apple is cranking up production of the $6,000 desktop computer at a factory near Shanghai, the Wall Street Journal reports. Many component suppliers are closer to Shanghai than the US sites are, so Apple will save on shipping costs.

"Final assembly is only one part of the manufacturing process," Apple told CNN in a statement. The company, which has been pressured by President Trump to make more of its products in the US, once promised to invest $100 million in the Austin, Texas, plant where the Mac Pro has been made. The computer, which recently had its first design refresh in six years, is designed for professionals who use it for production rendering and video editing. (More Mac Pro stories.)
