(Newser) – David Lynch hasn't brought much "strangeness into the world" lately, Vanity Fair reports. Now, he's here to change that. A 17-minute, black-and-white film—What Did Jack Do?—went up Monday on Netflix in which Lynch interrogates a murder suspect who happens to be a monkey. The co-creator of Twin Peaks plays a detective who finds the suit-wearing monkey is no pushover, matching him cliche for cliche, per Rolling Stone. ("I'd like you to start talking turkey." "I’ll see you and raise you five.")

The short is surreal and hard to follow, but Lynch fans wouldn't have it any other way. And the production is all David Lynch: He wrote, directed and edited the film while helping with sound editing, set design and building the set, per Mashable. There's humor, and the monkey naturally works in a song, but the film turns dark. Still, What Did Jack Do? embodies "the genius of David Lynch," per Vanity Fair. (Read more David Lynch stories.)
