What We Know About Wisconsin Parade Tragedy

Few answers have emerged about Sunday's tragedy in Waukesha, Wisconsin, where an SUV plowed into a Christmas parade. The latest on what is being reported:

• Casualties: Police say five people are dead and more than 40 injured, but the numbers could change given the chaos of events, reports the AP. Witnesses say victims ranged in age from young children to members of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies group.
• Suspect: A person of interest is in custody, but authorities aren't saying much beyond that. Eyewitnesses reported the driver was male, reports the New York Times. Police also have recovered the vehicle, and say they don't believe there is any further threat to the public. Police Chief Daniel Thompson says it's too soon to know whether this will be characterized as an act of terrorism, per CNN.

• What happened: The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that video (from both the city's live feed and social media) show that the red SUV broke through barriers about 4:40pm local time and sped down the roadway where the parade was taking place. Authorities released video, but note that while it's not of the impact itself, it still may be disturbing to watch.
• On the scene: Corey Montiho, a Waukesha school district board member, tells the Journal-Sentinel that members of his daughter's dance team were among those hit. "They were pom-poms and shoes and spilled hot chocolate everywhere," he says. "I had to go from one crumpled body to the other to find my daughter. My wife and two daughters were almost hit. Please pray for everybody. Please pray."
• First person: Parade attendee Angelito Tenorio writes a first-person account for USA Today. "The last thing I remember hearing was the band playing music," writes the local alderman. "As we were walking back to Main Street, I saw an SUV speeding down the parade route. I heard the motorist revving the engine. It sounded like the person was putting the pedal to the metal."
