Let's be blunt: We know Joe Biden is up there in years, you know it, and most voters know it. Now, the 81-year-old president running for a second term is addressing the age issue head-on in a new ad meant to soothe concerns that he doesn't have the stamina for a repeat four years. "Look, I'm not a young guy. That's no secret," Biden kicks off the one-minute spot released Friday, which the Hill notes will be aired in certain battleground states across the nation, including Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. "But here's the deal: I understand how to get things done for the American people."

Biden then details some of his accomplishments while in office, including shepherding the country through COVID, passing legislation to lower prescription drug prices, and leading the way in sending through a bipartisan infrastructure bill. Leaning into his age and experience as an advantage, not a liability, the president also looks ahead to his vision for America, suggesting he'll keep fighting against climate change and will restore Roe vs. Wade as "the law of the land again."

"Donald Trump believes the job of a president is to take care of Donald Trump," Biden says of his rival. "I believe the job of the president is to fight for you, the American people." The promotion is part of a $30 million ad blitz over the next six weeks. The New York Times notes that the more playful, casual tone of this ad could appeal to younger voters, which may also explain why it's airing on Comedy Central and ESPN, among other cable and local broadcast outlets. Biden ends the ad with a jokey outtake: "Look, I'm very young, energetic, and handsome—what the hell am I doing this for?" (At age 77, former President Donald Trump is no spring chicken either, for what it's worth.)
