Penny Hardaway and his balky 36-year-old knees are headed to Miami after not playing in the NBA for over a year. The ex-All-Star signed a 1-year, $1.2 million deal with the Heat yesterday after turning Pat Riley's head during workouts recently. With once and future teammate Shaquille O'Neal, Haradway led the Magic to the Finals in 1995.

Hardaway, rebuffed by the Heat a year ago, flew under the radar this summer, the Miami Herald reports. Almost before his new teammates realized he was a contender for a roster spot, the deal was done. Said Riley: "We have been impressed at his hard work and dedication this summer to get back in shape and return to the NBA." (More Penny Hardaway stories.)
