Just Wait: 'Trashy' Letterman Letters Are Coming
Robert J. Halderman appears in State Supreme Court in New York, Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, for an arraignment on an attempted grand larceny charge.

It’s only a matter of time before Stephanie Birkitt’s “trashy” love letters to David Letterman become public. Sadly, “we’re not talking crazy sexual escapades,” a source tells the New York Daily News. “It’s her musings about them. It’s trash.” More on the Letterman fiasco:

  • Sure, the situation is unpleasant, but CBS must be happy at the ratings bump Letterman’s late-night confessionals are causing. Monday’s show saw a 36% increase in viewers over the week prior, Reuters reports.

  • No more long confessions or apologies from the Late Show host on last night’s show, but he joked that he should get an understudy because “there are quite a variety of reasons why I might need one.”
  • The lawyer for alleged extortionist Robert Halderman says he has evidence Letterman committed sexual harassment, and will use it if the case goes to trial, the Los Angeles Times reports.
  • Paul Shaffer, Letterman’s bandleader since 1982, has a new memoir out—but when asked by Time if this brouhaha will help sales, all he said was, “I have no idea. I really don't.”
