Pelosi's Call for Probe of Mosque Foes Raises a Stink

Nancy Pelosi has set off a mini-furor by calling for an investigation of those who oppose the proposed mosque and Islamic center. "There's no question that there's a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some," she told a San Francisco radio station yesterday. "And I join those who have called for looking into how ... this opposition to the mosque (is) being funded." Today, she clarified (at least a little) by calling for "transparency" among both the mosque planners and its opponents, notes the Hill.

Some reaction:

  • Ed Morrissey, Hot Air: "Of course! What better way to defend the First Amendment freedom of religion than to have the Speaker of the House ask the federal government investigate those exercising their First Amendment right to free speech?"
  • Greg Sargent, Plum Line: "It's unclear, to me at least, exactly what this means." Does she want to look at outside groups or maybe GOP party committees?
"Either way, Pelosi doesn't seem to be calling for some kind of government investigation into the mosque's critics, as thrilling as that would be to some on the right."
