Crystal Renn: Why I Lost the Weight

To stay plus-size would have meant another eating disorder, model says

(Newser) – Pressure to be thin caused model Crystal Renn to develop an eating disorder early in her career—but after she became a plus-size model, she felt similar pressure not to get thin. Critics were flabbergasted when Renn, 24, shed some of her famous curves last year, but Renn says she’s just doing what is healthiest for her. “If I followed what the public wanted from me, or what the media wants from me, I would be doing the same thing. I would have a binge-eating disorder,” she says in a video blog for the Ford modeling agency.

“I think by placing a title on my head—which is plus-size—and the picture that people have placed in their mind about what plus-size is—I’ll basically fail you just with that. Because I couldn't possibly live up to that,” she continues. “And at this point in my life, I would actually have to have another eating disorder to live up to that expectation.” She adds that, although her recent weight loss is actually due to a healthy lifestyle and moderate exercise, many people thought that “the industry was pressuring me, my agency was pressuring me, I was pressuring me, but it was just not the case in all three cases.”
