(Newser) – Cynthia Nixon stirred up quite a bit of controversy with her recent statement that being gay is, for her, "a choice," and now she's backtracking a bit. "While I don't often use the word, the technically precise term for my orientation is bisexual," she says in a statement to the Advocate. "I believe bisexuality is not a choice, it is a fact. What I have 'chosen' is to be in a gay relationship."

She adds that her original comments were meant to reflect her own "personal story of being gay," and that since people come to the gay community in different ways, "we can't and shouldn't be pigeon-holed into one cultural narrative which can be uninclusive and disempowering." Most members of the gay community, she clarifies, "cannot and do not choose the gender of the persons with whom they seek to have intimate relationships because, unlike me, they are only attracted to one sex."
