Paul McCartney had a heart operation in secret in September, sources close to the former Beatle tell the Guardian. "Paul is in excellent health" after the coronary angioplasty, a source said. "Fans certainly have no need to worry." A filament tube is passed through the heart’s arteries to clear plaque blockages during the procedure, which is fairly common.

"Anyone who saw him singing [on a BBC show] on New Year's Eve will have seen that he is back on top form," said the source. The Guardian reports that McCartney, 65, became concerned about heart trouble in 2006 and was under doctors' watch. He is in currently in nasty divorce proceedings with second wife Heather Mills.
