Good thing David Beckham can afford to hire a driver: The former soccer star has been banned from driving for six months after a member of the public took a photo of him holding his phone at knee level while driving his $130,000 Bentley in "slowly moving" London traffic, then sent that photo to police. "Instead of looking straight forward, paying attention to the road he appeared to be looking at his lap," a prosecutor said in court Thursday. It's illegal to hold a phone while driving in the UK. The 44-year-old was hit with six points on his driver's license, which already had six points on it from previous speeding incidents, and also must pay more than $1,200 in fines and court fees, the BBC reports.
Per CNN, Beckham's lawyer said his client didn't recall the incident, but still acknowledged there was "no excuse" and had decided to plead guilty. "He has seen the photographs and his only observation is it looks as if it is stationary traffic," the lawyer added, per the Evening Standard. The lawyer also noted that the punishment actually will impact Beckham: "He takes his children to school each day when he can and he picks them up when he can, and actually to deprive them of that is something that he will acknowledge." Amusingly, TMZ calls Beckham's day in court the "handsomest court appearance ever," noting he "turned the courtroom into a catwalk and strutted into court looking BEAUTIFUL."
