Memphis DL Killed in Shooting
This recent handout released by the University of Memphis shows Taylor Bradford. Bradford, 21, a University of Memphis football player, apparently was shot near a university housing complex Sunday night Sept. 30, 2007 in Memphis, and then crashed a car he was driving into a tree a short distance away...   (Associated Press)

University of Memphis defensive lineman Taylor Bradford was shot dead outside campus housing last night, in an act university officials say was targeted specifically against the junior. Police did not concur, asserting the incident might have been random; classes were cancelled today for the 20,000-student school, and campus housing was closed overnight.

Nonetheless, the team will play its scheduled game against Marshall this week. Bradford, a popular transfer, drove his car into a tree after being shot; it is unclear whether he was shot in or before entering the vehicle. His was the second student-athlete shooting in two days, the other being of a sprinter at Ole Miss. (More NCAA stories.)
