The Tourist stars Angelina Jolie as a femme fatale expertly evading international authorities, with Wisconsin math teacher Johnny Depp at her side. It’s chock-full of cliches, the acting isn't so hot, and critics just aren’t on board:

  • “There is a moment in The Tourist when Johnny Depp turns to Angelina Jolie and asks 'Why is all this happening?' It's a question moviegoers will be asking themselves as well,” writes Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times.

  • “The truth is that it takes an exceptional director to prevent an entertainment as flimsy as this from collapsing under its own weightlessness,” writes Manohla Dargis in the New York Times. As for Jolie, “she never ignites, and neither does the movie.”
  • “It doesn’t matter that the plot is absurd. That goes with the territory,” notes Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times. But “the acting and dialogue need a little style and grace and kidding around”—which we don’t get from Depp.
  • Yes, that's right. Johnny Depp doesn't wow for once. "Who knew he could be wooden and unconvincing in a role?" writes Claudia Puig for USA Today. "What makes this all the more hard to fathom is that The Tourist was directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who made one of the decade's best films, the Oscar-winning foreign film of 2006, Germany's The Lives of Others."
