Edwards Appearance Gets Hairy
In this photo released by CBS, Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards, left, prepares to parry another possible attempt to mess his hair by host David Letterman, on the set of "The Late Show with David Letterman," Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008. (AP Photo/CBS, J.P. Filo)   (Associated Press)

David Letterman started it, when he couldn't resist giving John Edwards' perfectly coifed hair an exploratory  tousle. Letterman did get permission, asking “Could I just mess your hair up a little bit? Has it ever been messed up?" Edwards was game. “You want to? Go ahead,” the candidate said, taking a swipe at Letterman's head in return.

Letterman also asked Edwards what it was like to watch, at close range, the nasty fight between fellow hopefuls Clinton and Obama at Monday night's debate. Edwards said he was trying to “represent the grown-up wing of the Democratic Party." He also said he had to “really work to be heard” in a race in which the frontrunners are a woman and a black man, both with “enormous amounts of money.” (More David Letterman stories.)
