Shopaholic Not So Addictive

Subprime rom-com maxes out the clichés

Chick-lit flick Confessions of a Shopaholic is one victim the credit crisis should have claimed, say critics. Isla Fisher stars as a credit card addict who lands a job at a financial magazine, but her considerable comic gifts are wasted by a script that turns her into a "babbling ninny," Moira Macdonald writes in the Seattle Times.

A top-quality cast and Sophie Kinsella's best-selling source material make Confessions look like an appealing package, Michael Rechtshaffen writes in the Hollywood Reporter, "but the previously owned contents are flimsy." This bargain-basement Sex and the City was filmed before the downturn killed rabid brand-name consumption, Dana Stevens writes in Slate, giving it the "musty fascination of something exhumed from a time capsule."
