They look sweaty and uncomfortable, but make no mistake: Boots are hot—as in trendy—this summer. "It’s a way of saying, ‘I am a tough, cool and bad girl and don’t mess with me,’ and at the same time, women want to stay feminine," the creative director of Barneys New York tells Bloomberg. "The only faux pas is not to have confidence. You have to look like you can kick some butt."

Trendsetters kicking up their platform heels include Miley Cyrus and Chloe Sevigny. Celeb sightings help drive sales of designer versions of the footwear, just one element of a significant rebound in luxury spending. But the out-of-season trend isn't drawing unanimous raves. The latest boots are clunkier than usual, moving one former model to turn up her nose. "It looks like you’re trying too hard to be cool," she says. "For the summer, it’s too heavy."
